Analysis of Low Cycle Fatigue Considering Geometric Manufacturing Tolerances

The case study introduces a new analysis method for low cycle fatigue (LCF) in gas turbine (GT) casings, which is based on statistical investigations including 3D random fields. The evaluated casings were manufactured from cast steel. As their surfaces were not machined, they show process related casting tolerances relative to the computer-aided design (CAD) reference geometry. The goal of the study was to investigate the quantitative impact of these geometrical deviations on the LCF life of GT casings. This enables the optimization of service intervals and repair costs by more comprehensive quality controls during manufacturing. In addition, the analysis results might permit the definition of less strict manufacturing tolerances, what would lead to reduced manufacturing costs without a loss of quality.
