Plastics appeared as design materials of choice about 30 years ago. Their multi-variable, non-linear nature was not well understood by engineers trained to work in a linear elastic world. We discuss challenges related to processes such as injection molding vs. blow-molding; filled plastics; and modeling for crash applications. We include findings related to volumetric yield and its relationship to failure. We describe material database technology that was created to store multi-variable data and the analytical tools created to help the CAE engineer understand and use plastics material data.

Computational simulation helps to estimate and improve boiler performance and fuel burn-up efficiency, lower polluting emissions, forecast slagging areas, etc. Using ANSYS Fluent software along with ANSYS ICEM CFD mesh generator and Design Modeler geometry tool helps to perform numerical analysis of a boiler with complex geometry, taking into account complex physical processes inside.

Optimal design of Nautilus-based dual-usage turbine

The original aerodynamic design of a non-cavitating marine turbine exhibited performance-degrading cavitation in the hub region at high rotation rate. Using a numerical optimization approach, the cavitation was fully eliminated by updating the local geometry of turbine helical blades. Computational outputs were obtained using a combination of ANSYS SpaceClaim, ANSYS CFX and Fluent, ANSYS Simplorer and ANSYS optiSLang software working in the ANSYS Workbench 'end-to-end' environment.
