Simulating Processes in Combustion Chambers of Boilers

Simulating processes in combustion chambers is a critical point at the design stage, modernization, as well as in boiler unit operation. Computational simulation helps to estimate and improve boiler performance and fuel burn-up efficiency, lower polluting emissions, forecast slagging areas, etc. Using ANSYS Fluent software along with ANSYS ICEM CFD mesh generator and Design Modeler geometry tool helps to perform numerical analysis of a boiler with complex geometry, taking into account complex physical processes inside.

In order to identify the root cause for severe damages in the combustion chamber, a comprehensive simulation using Ansys CFX has been carried out. The simulation contains all piece parts of the real hardware and shows that the original design of the chamber and the staging of the combustion leads to areas with undesired hot spots. Additionally, a weakness of the cooling concept generates unprotected areas, which are the starting point for oxidation and burnings. The development of a design alteration has also been supported by numerical simulation.
