Dr.-Ing. Pierluigi Mollicone

Dr. Mollicone is a mechanical engineer, who has always greatly valued the role of computer aided engineering tools. His research and teaching areas revolve around the use of the finite element method applied to thermo-mechanical stress analysis, for the design and development of products, components or processes.

Curriculum Vitae – Career / Current Position

  • November 2002: B.Eng.(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, First Class Honours, University of Malta
  • August 2002: Product Engineer at Methode Electronics Malta Ltd; responsible for a range of automotive switches in various stages of product design such as pre-development and quoting; design for novel products and design modifications of existing products
  • November 2003 - January 2007: Doctoral (PhD) Degree in at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, U.K.; field of research: simulation of welding processes using finite element analysis for the prediction of residual stresses and distortions; industrial relevance of the research: the mitigation of adverse effects of welding during ship fabrication
  • 2006 - 2008: Swellfix, a start-up company developed from Shell’s portfolio of Technology Ventures to develop and commercialise novel technologies for the oil and gas industry; responsible for the implementation of swellable packers, a novel technology for zonal isolation and inflow control in petroleum wells
  • September 2008: appointed Lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malta; field of study: the application of computational techniques (Computer Aided Engineering – CAE) such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for the analysis, assessment and design of structural components and thermo-mechanical processes (e.g. welding); Preparation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate study units in the fields of general mechanical engineering, stress analysis and finite element analysis; supervision of undergraduate and post graduate students; sourcing and management of research projects; coordination of the Erasmus exchange programme at the Faculty
  • 2008 to date: Faculty of Engineering Erasmus Coordinator

Research projects revolve around the application of thermo-mechanical stress analysis in Mechanical Engineering using Computational (Finite Element Analysis FEA) and Experimental methods.
