The ITER Project is an unprecedented international collaboration in which scientist and engineers from Europe, Japan, Russia, USA, China, South Korea and India are working together on the next step for the development of fusion. The project is undertaken by a new international organisation: the ITER International Organization (IO), based in Cadarache, in the South of France.

The Programmatic Objective of the project is to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy for peaceful purposes. The technical objective are to:

  1. demonstrate extended burn of DT plasmas, with steady state as the ultimate goal,
  2. integrate and test all essential fusion power reactor technologies and components and
  3. demonstrate safety and environmental acceptability of fusion.
